New Study Shows Home Improvement Intentions Of DIY Loving Brits
Programmes such as Changing Rooms, Grand Designs and 60 Minute Makeover are causing rising numbers of budding Handy Andys and Nick Knowleses to renovate their homes.
Such is the claim of Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans, where in a recent piece of research it was shown that just under three-quarters (73 per cent) of budding DIYers claim to get inspiration to retile bathrooms, decorate rooms, convert loft space and undertake other projects after watching shows on the small screen.
According to the financial services provider, redecorating rooms is the most sought-after improvement to a property, with more than half (54 per cent) of those questioned looking to get this done. Some 43 per cent want a new bathroom, with 41 per cent looking to have either new flooring or carpeting fitted. Meanwhile, just under a fifth of respondents have their eyes set on replacing their guttering networks. Double-glazing, garden landscaping and having a new driveway were indicated as other home improvement projects Britons wish to have carried out.
Furthermore, it appears that consumers are willing to splash out significant sums of money on improving their home. Alliance & Leicester revealed that the typical Briton thinks it would cost them 11,833 pounds to carry out work on their house to make it match their property desires.
Those consumers looking for an effective means in which to finance renovation work on their home, may find that taking out a home improvement loan could be recommended.
However, it was revealed that having improvements carried out on rooms and gardens can have more than just an aesthetic impact on a house. Citing figures by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the firm pointed out that having a loft conversion can add some 10,000 pounds on to the value of a property. Fitting double-glazing and a new bathroom were shown to place 8,000 and 7,500 pounds respectively on top of how much a home is worth.
Commenting on the data, Richard Al-Dabbagh, head of personal loans for Alliance & Leicester, claimed that the proliferation of DIY-focused TV programmes can make carrying out home improvements look like it is “an easy thing to do”. He added that this has meant many consumers are now looking towards renovating their property.
Mr Al-Dabbagh said: “Home improvements should make properties desirable, not only for homeowners while they are living in the house, but also for when they choose to make the most of the investment of time and money and sell. While redecorating rooms is a quite an easy and inexpensive home improvement, it is in fact loft conversions and new kitchens that can add the most value to a property.”
He went to assert that homeowners wishing to fund such home improvement projects might want to consider getting a personal loan. The financial expert added, however, that those looking to do this should take the time to ensure they get the loan which is most suitable for their needs.
Meanwhile, propertyfinder spokesperson Nicholas Leeming claimed that as there are fewer amounts of people looking to purchase a home it is important for consumers wishing to sell their property to do as much as possible in ensuring that their house appeals to would-be buyers. It was suggested that having a tidy garden and redecorating rooms can help result in a quick sale, although such moves may not add too much money to the overall value of a house.
Whether wishing to boost the value of a home before putting it on the market or simply looking complete a makeover of the living room, getting a personal loan for the purposes of home improvement may be recommended. In taking out this kind of loan, borrowers may find that they are able to not only purchase the material required for such projects but also hire qualified professionals to carry out the work. A home improvement loan could also be advised for those consumers looking to renovate their garden this summer.
Last month, a study by Lloyds TSB showed that half of Britons are set to spend more than 200 pounds on enhancing green spaces, with three per cent prepared to splash out 750 pounds.

How To Pay For That Next Home Improvement Project
Most home owners will tell you that there the work on a house is never done, whether you’ve just moved in or whether you’ve been living there for forty years. Almost all home owners have a list of home improvements they’d love to accomplish but a lack of money to pay for these improvements often means that projects are put on hold for years.
That’s a problem, especially when it comes to home improvements that are necessary such as replacing a new roof, repairing or replacing plumbing or electrical work or simply putting in better windows and door.
Here are a few ways you can borrow or raise the money you need to pay for those home improvements.
Home Equity Line of Credit – Known as a HELOC this is a “secure” loan from a bank or credit union, which means you are using your home as collateral on the loan. If you bought your home for $100,000 five years ago but now you could sell it for $150,000 then you essentially have $50,000 in equity in your home. A bank might give you a Home Equity Line of Credit for that $50,000. You can then write checks for some or all of that money and pay the money back over time with interest.
Home Equity Loan – Similar to a Home Equity Line of Credit, a Home Equity Loan is usually for a fixed amount of money and is given all at once. The interest rates on Home Equity Loans and Home Equity Lines of Credit often differ so a banker or loan officer can tell you which one is best for you.
Hardware Store Credit Cards – I know, opening another credit card isn’t always the best thing to do, but many large hardware stores offer zero percent interest rates and even discounts on purchasing home improvement products when you use their hardware store credit card. If you’re going to use this method, you should probably have your project planned out in advance and have a pretty good idea of how you’re going to pay it off. The discount is often only good on the first purchase and the low interest rate doesn’t late forever.
Sell Old Home Improvement Materials – If you’re remodeling your bathroom you could almost definitely sell those old cabinets and maybe even that old tile to raise some money which could help pay for your new bathroom features. Remember that what is old to you may be new to someone else. I have some neighbors who actually did this together. One neighbor tore out all his kitchen cabinets and then sold them to another neighbor who installed them all in his garage. The seller got some money for what he would have thrown away and the buyer got some great cabinets for his garage at a fraction of the cost of what new cabinets would have cost.
Be smart when pricing out and paying for home improvements. With a little creativity and the proper knowledge you can finance those home improvement projects and fix up your home without breaking the bank!

A Few Home Improvement Ideas to Increase Your Homes Value
Copyright (c) 2008 Smoky Mountain Painting
Would you like to increase the market value of your house? There are some home improvement projects will bring a return when you sell your home, but many home improvement projects will not offer much of a return on your investment. Choose your home improvement projects carefully and if you borrow money to complete your home improvement project, do your research first and be sure that you stand a good chance to recover the cost of the project when you decide to sell your home.
Kitchen remodeling is a great way to add value to your home. Upgrading your appliances, replacing door and cabinet handles and painting walls can add new life to your kitchen plus add value to your home. Kitchens sell a home, so remodeling a kitchen should be a first choice for a home improvement project. Sometimes doing it yourself can save money, but consider hiring a professional for the large jobs. The top five kitchen remodeling jobs recommended by Realtors are painting, cabinet refacing, new counter tops, new floors and a modern cook top range.
A bathroom remodel is second only to kitchen remodeling in terms of getting the most return on your home improvement investment. A bathroom remodel can often mean making the most of your current space, by upgrading fixtures, flooring and lighting. A few inexpensive ways to make your existing bathroom more beautiful and appealing include upgrading your cabinets, counter tops, sinks, tile or your tub and shower. However, if you do decide to add a new bathroom, it is going to increase the value of your home.
Kitchens and bathroom remodeling are both great choices when you want to add value to your home. Kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects are the best at recouping their cost and adding to the resale value of your house. The average return on a bathroom or kitchen remodel is 100-105%.
Increasing the curb appeal of your home is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to increase the value of your home. Applying a fresh coat of paint can make the inside of your home appear more appealing to potential buyers, which could mean a quicker sale. Neutral colors are a good choice when you are preparing your house to sell. Neutral colors blend well with a variety of other colors and can make a room look larger and more open.
Your roof is one of the first impressions people have of a home. With proper maintenance, a high quality roof should last a very long time. A new roof won’t add a lot of value to your home, but it will help prevent the types of repairs that can result from water leaking in from your roof.
If your carpeting or vinyl flooring is begining to show signs of wear this can adversely affect the appearance of the whole room and detract from the value. So replace the carpeting in rooms where the wear is severe to help increase your homes value. Often, a good carpet cleaning is all that is needed.
Naturally, you can only make the home improvements that your budget will allow. But many of these suggestions that I have discussed are not very expensive . All of them however will enhance the appearance and add value to most homes.
Remember that with any home improvement project moderation is the key. Don’t go overboard. Focus on improving two or three areas in your home which need the most work.

Estimates For Home Improvement – Be Prepared Beforehand With These
When you contact any home improvement company, they will offer to visit your home. They talk it over with you as to what improvements you want, inspect your premises, take measurements wherever necessary and take all this information back to their office. There they will analyze it and then draw up estimates of how much expense could be incurred for the home improvements you want done. These estimates are done free of cost by genuine companies. You may be sure that the company is a scammer if it demands a fee for submitting the estimate. If you pay them, then there is a possibility that you will never see them again.
Estimates for home improvement help you to arrive at a figure of what amount needs to be spent for the job you have on hand. If several home improvement comanies give you similar estimates, then you will know that is the reasonable cost you are likely to incur. That is the reason you should obtain quite a few different quotes. If you don’t do this, then you will end up paying an unreasonable amount for a job that might actually have cost only half the amount that you have paid.
Estimates are the first step you should take for any job of home improvement. It helps you determine what amount you should put aside for the budget. You must make sure to put away a little more amount than the estimate as there could be unexpected expenses and could put a burden on your resources.
Estimates for home improvement serve as a general guide when you are planning some improvements to your home. It is crucial to the whole process of home improvement as it prevents you from spending too much on one item. Not only that, it can also help you to cut costs wherever possible. Home improvement projects are harmed mostly by tiny little details that are overlooked when budgeting or which you come across unexpectedly. Whenever you make a budget, do remember that there is no need to spend all the money. Do not feel discouraged by the total expenses that you budget for. If you plan your work carefully, you may be happily surprised by the amount that is left over from your budget.
Lastly, make it a point to remember that home improvements are undertaken to make your home more comfortable to live in for yourself and your family and life’s little luxuries that you really desire are definitely worth a little extra expense.

No Home Improvement is Possible Without Equipment and Supplies
Change is the essence of life. This is evident from the fact that we like to change and improve the looks our house even if nothing is wrong with it. The human mind hates monotony and always seeks change.
Now change has no universal definition. The placement of a new showpiece on the wall may constitute change for some. On the other hand, nothing less than a comprehensive makeover of the house would suffice for others.
Unless you come up with ideas, you cannot redecorate your house. There are many sources of ideas available for your use. Some of them are:
a. Home improvement catalogs
b. Friends
c. Neighbors
d. Interior designers
e. Family members
Home improvement catalogs are very popular amongst home owners. These catalogs provide great ideas at very low cost. Further, the ideas are suggested by persons who themselves are in the business of improving homes. Do not forget to check at least one catalog before you proceed.
Further home improvement catalogs involve recommendations and reviews by local people. Since a person would not want to be known as a cheat in the community in which he or she lives, the chances of catalogs bringing up good ideas is very high.
You will have to purchase supplies and provide them to the labor so that the work can be completed. Acquisition of supplies involves:
Searching for suppliers
Determining the cost of materials
Bargaining and haggling for discounts
Finalizing the deal
Your search for supplies, tools and equipment should take you to the local hardware store.
Each process will require your personal touch. Of course, it is essential that you consider the requirements and expectations of all the persons living in your house. You cannot expect people to approve all your ideas.
It is your duty to communicate the improvement plan to all others and obtain their go ahead. You may find an even better idea from a member of your family.
If you are redecorating your drawing room, then the new furniture may form a significant part of your total budget. You should be prepared for this expenditure. This approach will help you avoid other unnecessary expenditure.
You will look plain silly if you are not prepared for spending lots of money for getting a brand new carpet or a brand new chandelier. However, you would look equally stupid if you go about amassing a small fortune for the purpose of repainting your house.
Merely purchasing lots of supplies will not suffice. You should have the knack of using the materials in a proper manner to get maximum benefits. Home improvement is all about ideas.
Do not share essential responsibilities with outsiders. It is your house and you stand to gain the most by improving it. Relying on others puts you at risk. Most home owners make the mistake of relying on the labor to decide on the changes to be made to the home.
It is pertinent to note that the improvement in the home comes about not just by physical changes but also by mental satisfaction. Unless you feel that the home has improved, no amount of structural changes will satisfy you.
Home improvement is not all about spending a lot of money. Even a small amount spent smartly can make you feel as if you are living in a brand new home. Hence, do not stick to conventional ideas only. Be bold in coming up with new ideas.

Using A Home Improvement Loan
There are an infinite number of ways of using a home improvement loan; whether for a new conservatory or extension, building a garage, or simply for renovations and refurbishments, you are limited only by your own imagination. If you have an older house, or merely feel that your property is in need of a bit of a “spruce up,” a home improvement loan may be the best way to make your plans a reality. In addition, home improvement loans can be used to add value to your house, if you are thinking of putting it on the market.
Many homeowners use a home improvement loan to fit a new kitchen, convert loft space into an extra bedroom, or build a conservatory to catch the sun. Others prefer to use the money to redecorate, put in new carpets, or more general remodeling of their home. Who hasn’t dreamed of having their very own swimming pool! If you have the space, a home improvement loan could easily be used for just this purpose.
Using a home improvement loan in this way will help you adapt your dwelling to suit a growing family, perhaps, or conversely convert spare bedrooms when your children have left the house. Finally, not the least of the advantages of a home improvement loan, of course, is the value that it can potentially add to your home, meaning that far from costing you money, a home improvement loan will reap cash dividends when you come to sell your house.
The world is now seeing a new innovative way of using home improvement loans – as a means of correcting the economy in a time of recession. In this current global downturn certain countries have implemented low interest home improvements loans and even credits and grants as a means of helping citizens impove their homes and boost the economy at the same time by spending money, by putting money back into the economy.
